A Really Dumb Quote…Ottawa Mayors’ Trial

The legal team for Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien came up with the most astounding observation in all political and legal history in Canada.
O’Brien on trial for a bunch of crooked shit….influence peddling and other choice things had his legal team offer up the defence that …..(get this shit guys:)
“If Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien is guilty of influence peddling, then countless Canadian politicians are also criminals for offering patronage plums in exchange for political benefits”.
You know something Ollie…these lawyers may be right!
They also went on to say that there is nothing unusual in that, and that patronage is just a part of politics.
Well, this has got to be the first time I’ve heard of anyone offer up the defence that hey, everyone else does it, so why shouldn’t I?
This kind of sounds like one of my kids trying to weasel his way out of a situation.

It's not the first time you've heard this defence mounted in connection with politicians. Remember Dalton McWeasel and his promise (he signed a contract) not to raise taxes? He was taken to court and the Ontario Supreme Court ruled that politicians lie all the time so they can't be held accountable for promises they make.

The "everybody else is doing it" defence is enshrined in Canadian law, …if you happen to be a law maker. Don't try using it if you're a private citizen. It's a special defence reserved for the special people we elect to office.

If anyone dumps on you for calling politicians lying rat bastards just tell them you're quoting the Ontario Supreme Court. šŸ™‚
