Legalization Of Marijuana Could Provide Necessary Funds For Government

MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION WOULD PROVIDE BILLIONS IN ECONOMIC STIMULUS

The Canadian governments’ war on Marijuana has been a miserable failure for more than 70 years now.
The social and financial costs of this prohibition have been enormous in countless ways and as we are seeing our government has little in the way of cash to support themselves but they will still spend billions this year attempting to enforce an unenforceable law.
During the 1930’s alcohol(despite its’ notorius history)was removed from prohibition as a result of our government needing tax resources to stabilize its’ federalist system. Canadas’ government is in the exact same position today as it was back then, and the underlying current running across the country says legalize marijuana, tax marijuana and put the money to use.
More than 1 million Canadians are now using marijuana on a regular basis(1x per week or more)for recreation and for medication.(yeah)Roughly 10% of the population consumes pot several times per year.
If those 1 million Canadians paid taxes on the pot they consumed and if the people supplying pot to those consumers paid taxes on their incomes, the benefit to the country financially would be enormous. The resultant savings from this relaxed prohibition on pot would return billions in revenue to this cash strapped government, and would finally bring regulation to an industry that has been begging to pay taxes for more than 70 years.

The Canadian government never prohibited alcohol. We were the chief suppliers for the mobs that ran illegal booze into the U.S. Joe Kennedy got rich selling Canadian booze.

Have you really thought about the argument that taxing marijuana sales would be good for anyone but the people collecting the tax. When’s the last time giving more money to government benefited anyone but government?

You forgot to mention the negative side of marijuana. All the peoples that would become sick, because of marijuana. The cost would surely be enormous. Just take a look at cigarettes it’s a legal product it brings in billions of $$$ in tax’s and yet governments spend billions of $$$ in health care cost, caused by smoking. So where is the profit? It will do more harm than good to our society. There is no upside to it.

What? You make it sound like nobody smokes dope. Pretty much everyone that would smoke dope if it were legal is already smoking it. If there are associated health costs we’re already paying them.

The most important thing that drug-related laws can do is protect the innocent from the inebriated. Preventing someone from using a drug recreationally for fear that they'd become dangerous is a terrible idea. By that rationale, guns and cars should be illegal. I'd say in general, a gun is more useful than a marijuana joint, but that may not be the case for people who are suffering the pain of a disease. As long as the user is not posing a threat to my own well-being, they should be free to treat themselves as they wish.
