Community Services Department Needs Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars for Flower Beds

Woodstocks’ rec department has asked council for cash and received more than $200,000.00 of it this week to put towards the flower bed program in the city of Woodstock.

Every year the city rips up flower beds and plants an assortment of annual flowers at a huge cost to taxpayers. Councillor Connie Lauder says they are creating jobs by spending the money on flowers, and they are also creating stability in the local economy with ….flowers.( I wonder if the homeless can eat them?)

The city of Woodstock…COW, spend tons of cash on annual flowers every year and it really is a waste of time and money. At the end of the year the plants are removed and tossed out or placed into compost. They could bring the costs of that program down by purchasing perennials which flower every year instead of wasting money on annuals.

Another idea I have is to sell annual rights to flower beds each year to Woodstock businesses who would then be responsible for their maintenance over the course of the year. This would save a substantial amount of money and as well it would generate income that could be used to pay for the balance of the program which seems to be lawn mowing instead of burdening the taxpayer with unnecessary costs.

Considering the economy is falling apart I would suggest to city departments that you reign in your expenses.

Oh great. Each flowerbed will have a tacky mini billboard announcing to the world that the bed is maintained by some local business. We’ve got enough of that nonsense already. Downtown looks like a Dick Tracy cartoon. Everything is labeled. It’s silly and it looks like shit.

Perennials are a good idea. Replacing some of the flowering beds with shrubs would be even better. Shrubs require much less water and maintenance and by far the bulk of the cost is in labour to maintain the beds.

Couple things– another piece should run soon clarifying this in the S-R.
$200K is the overall budget, council only approved $21K to purchase annual bedding plants. The approval of the remaining monies would come when council starts its budget deliberations– hopefully within the next 6-8 weeks.

Staff time would be somewhat unaffected with perennials– grass still needs to be cut and trash still needs to be cleaned up. Extra time could be diverted to other needs.

    You’re right.
We’d have to come up with a specific tacky sign they could use…Or perhaps a community sign recognizing those who gave to the idea.(and place said sign behind the new bathroom in the park!)

Yeah. The flowers make up a small portion of the entire budget. There’s nothing like some know-it-all to ruin a perfectly good bitch session with facts. Go rain on somebody else’s parade Hugo.

The really pertinent part of the story isn’t the flowers, it’s Connie Lauder. Once again the noises coming from her mouth demonstrate why she simply isn’t bright enough to sit on Counci. The woman is a menace.

Uh, Counci. That’s Latin for Council. Just showin’ off. 🙂
