NDP Muslim Candidate Threatened After Being Accused Of Splitting Vote

“THIS IS A DEMOCRACY, NOT FAITH BASED POLITICS”
Mustafa Rizvi says he’s being called a “traitor to Islam” for running against another Muslim MP in the federal election.
Rizvi came in third for the NDP in Mississauga-Erindale, that was won by Conservative Bob Dechert, who won over Liberal incumbent Omar Alghabra by 239 votes.
Rizvi, who is a 28-year-old insurance adjuster, says he’s received nearly 24 threatening phone calls since election day, accusing him of splitting the Muslim vote and costing Alghabra, a Muslim, his seat.
“I’ve been getting harassment and phone calls from angry people,” he said. “But this isn’t faith-based politics; this is a democracy. Everybody has a right to run anywhere in the country.
“I ran as an equal Canadian, I ran as an NDP candidate. Just because I’m a Muslim running against a Muslim, why is that a question? Why is it not a question when one Christian runs against another Christian?”
“The Muslim community is closed-minded in that sense and that’s what I’m trying to look beyond. I have a future in the political business and I want to maintain it. I enjoy my religion, but I don’t make it a part of my political life.”
Liberal candidate Alghabra says that he doesn’t think Rizvi’s candidacy cost him the election. “We just didn’t get the voters out,” Alghabra stated.
“We didn’t get even the same number as last time. We got almost 3,300 votes less than in 2006. Obviously, the Conservatives did a better job of getting the vote out.”
“There will always be a few individuals who are over-zealous and frustrated and go over the top,” he said. “That’s unacceptable.”

    ‘Both are sickening.”

Only if you think Islam is a homogeneous mass of people who all think and act alike. There is a whole spectrum of Muslims living in this country. Some are wacked out jihadists. Many are not. The moderates tend to keep a low profile out of fear of the jihadists. I find it refreshing to see a moderate Muslim with the courage to speak up for democratic values in the face of jihadist intimidation. That’s why Muslim vs Muslim “works for me.”

Try thinking with your head instead of your left knee. You’ll find life less disturbing.

Racist? Exactly what race is Islam? It’s not a race nitwit. It’s a religion. Islam embraces all races.

Whatever helps you convince yourself you’re not a moron.

We have two politicians of the Islamic persuasion speaking in favour of democratic ideals as opposed to Islamic unity?

I almost wish one of these guys had been elected.
