It’s Like Selling Fresh Fruit…A Submission

Excerpts from a story in the Sentinel Review on Thursday June 9, 2005 regarding the expropriation of Blandford Square Mall (privately owned property) with the intention of turning it over to another private firm (Toyota)……….
The mall owner (Joe Chetti) is demanding more than $16 million for the nearly-empty site, assessed at $1.65 million. The county has offered more than $2 million for the mall and some reports suggest it may have bid as high as $3 million.
“The cleaner we can make any deal, the better. It is like selling fresh fruit,” he said. “But as a municipal government we have a responsibility to ratepayers to invest and develop wisely, and we must do so fairly,” County Warden Donald Woolcott said.
Woodstock Mayor Michael Harding suggested the battle for expropriation is one the mall owner cannot win.”Expropriation is a relatively simple issue, we will get it,” he said. “We have been getting ready for this. We have spent 16 months on this project.”
Brief re-cap. They expropriated. Joe Chetti sued.
Now run out and get a copy of todays Sentinel. Ill wait…………………
It’s beginning to look like Chetti may win his case. Governments are not supposed to take property away from one person and give it to another. That is not what expropriation is intended for. It seems that McGuinty, Harding and Woolcott’s little playing at Robin Hood by robbing the rich to give to the richer is going to blow up in OUR faces.
This is from today’s story in the Sentinel: Holbrough did suggest that Oxford would consider “opportunities” to resolve the matter if Blandford Square Developments was open to some form of settlement.
Got that folks? “Opportunities to resolve the matter.” That’s politician for a private backroom payoff complete with confidentiality agreement. They are prepared to pay Chetti because they’re in danger of losing the case. The courts are leaning toward declaring that maybe it’s not like “selling fresh fruit” nor is it a “relatively simple matter.”
I wonder how much Joe Chetti will settle for. Hes suing for 45 million. Maybe he’d settle for half. I wouldnt but lets assume Joe is a nice guy. That’s 22.5 million. That’s THREE art gallerys according to the current budget. Guess whos paying for this settlement. WE ARE!
We’ll never know for sure how much this will cost since it will be shrouded in secrecy but one thing is certain. We will be paying many MILLIONS because Harding and Woolcott figured it would be cheaper to use intimidation and the threat of force to acquire property rather than pay a fair price for it……….
and our County Councillors are looking for a RAISE?

I love it when history repeats itself. This is the second time a bunch of local bumbling twits have tried to use expropriation as a club to beat private citizens into submission. It blew up in their faces before. It looks like it will blow up in our faces this time.

Remember what Santayana said about people that pay no attention to history? They’re doomed to repeat it.

joe will get the money. We will pay.
County councillors will get a raise.
We will pay more taxes on our homes.
Stupid people making even stupider decisions.
They should have just paid the guy to begin with and it would have been over.
Could you imagine if he won his land back?

‘Could you imagine if he won his land back?”

At this point I think Toyota would be happy to sell it back to the County. They could use the income. 🙂

Ain’t it the truth. Too bad we can’t un-elect them.

‘Too bad we can’t un-elect them.”

We can. In two years. We should be able to fire the bastards right now but since they make the rules that’s not an option.

Pay attention next time. De-elect the Feckless Five.

    From HeartFm Sep 25…

County Council deferred an Official Plan Amendment that would see sewer development on county road 17 between the 13th line and Oxford Road 4.

They also deferred a decision for sewer work to begin in the village of Embro, a project in the works for nearly 15 years.

I wonder what happened to the money they had budgeted for these projects. Maybe something more urgent came up. Maybe something like paying off Joe Chetti so they can sweep their incompetence and complicity in a campaign of intimidation under the carpet.
