The Canadian Medical Association Journal Blasts Harper government For Undermining Public Health

In an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal this past week the editor comes out and directly blames the Harper government for creating an environment ripe for the Listeria outbreak that has killed 17 people across the country in the past few weeks.
The editorial which was signed by several doctors and sanctioned by journal editors goes on to state that “As in the Walkerton and SARS epidemics, an outbreak of this size may point to systemic failures across multiple levels,” in reference to the deadly water contamination eight years ago in Walkerton, Ontario that killed numerous people and could be direecctly linked back to Tony Clement, John Baird and Mike Harris.
“Listeria is the biological agent, cold cuts the vector, but the ultimate cause may be found in risky government decisions.”
The editorial blames the government for making a decision to effectively turn over control of the meat industry to private business thereby reducing the effectiveness of inspections combined with allowing the standards for listeria bacteria content in meat products to remain higher than other industrialized countries.
This government has reduced the effectiveness of the inspection regime that was designed and developed over the course of the past 50 years to the detriment of the Canadian people.
The editorial goes on to state that there is a need for a full arms length investigation into the matter on the scale of the Walkerton water scandal, the SARS epidemic and the tainted blood inquiry. “A full-scale public inquiry into the major failings of Canada’s food inspection system is necessary to protect Canadians from future epidemic threats, and the Canadian public should settle for nothing less than that.”
Harper has promised to hold some type of investigation, but only if the investigator promises to blame the Dion liberals.(or anyone, other than themselves)
