One more citizen expresses themselves on this gallery issue…AW

So. it’s going to cost 4 MILLION dollars to renovate the Shopper’s building that council paid $400,000 for. They’re trying to make this sound like a good thing? Who the hell buys a $400,000 property and pours 4 Million into it? I’ll tell you who. A bunch of irresponsible yahoos who didn’t hesitate to spend other people’s money on a building without engineering or feasibility studies. That’s one hell of a retrofit for a building that is (according to a recent engineer’s report) in reasonably good condition! Just what are they proposing to do with this building? How can they possibly pour 4 million dollars into it? We need a public meeting so these “Friends of the Gallery”, who amount to a handful of people who may or may not represent anyone but themselves, can present us with their proposal. I want to see them justify every one of those dollars. The last thing this city needs is another cultural money pit.Who are these people anyway? If they’re going to get 4 million of our tax dollars I think they should explain themselves. They may have sold their idea to 4 people on council but they havent’ sold it to me and they damned sure haven’t sold it to the general public. They’re trying to ram this one just like they tried to ram the golf course expansion. They’ve ignored the process, refused to do a feasibility study and kept the public in the dark. These four councillors were supposedly elected as responsible stewards of our tax dollars. Let them know how you think they’re doing so far.

This is a total misuse of our dollars. Not seeking public opinion or consensus on the issue makes this council look irresponsible.

I couldn’t agree more with what Jim is saying. I am sick and tired of seeing what the council is doing to this city and the way they are spending the tax dollars. Why the heck would you buy a building like that, only to pour that much money into in the first place. Is there not a way to impeach this entire group of misfits and replace them with four year olds.. At least the four year olds ask permission to do most things…..

the mayor buys into the theory that if you say it enough times people will believe it. That’s why him and his three stooges kept saying there has been SO much info and public debate. The public needs tell these people that they are not stupid. We need a group like the friends of pittock or green earth to stand against this wasteful spending of our tax dollars.

Does Hugo not cover the council meetings? Why has he not reported that there has been very little info come up or debate?

Don’t forget. That 4 million (technically 3.6 million) is just to bring the building up to code. They’re going to spend MORE to gussy it up and turn it into an art gallery!

Yes. Then I get up off my ass, go talk to the people you should be talking to and find out what’s really going on.

“They’re trying to ram this one just like they tried to ram the golf course expansion.”

Damn right. If we don’t fight this one just like we did the golf course they’ll be trying it again on some other damn fool project next year. Don’t forget, they’ve got two more years to go. They can do a lot of damage in two years.

On the positive side, this has to be good for the downtown. Rather than having yet another huge empty building, there will be another restored, active building bringing people to Dundas St. Hopefully, they’ll do a bit of shopping or get something to eat while they are there.

Some of the stores downtown are so unattractive! The more restoration that can be done, the better for the merchants downtown. Heritage = tourist = $

That’s what they said when they were promoting the Market Centre. It was bullshit then and it’s bullshit now. The idea that pouring millions into another downtown cultural money pit will somehow result in more shopping activity is sheer nonsense and completely without any basis in fact. The Market Centre has already demonstrated that nicely.

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.

You guys didn’t notice the council meeting before this they gave away the only municpal lot in the area(light st) to a hotel development? Now just where do you think anyone will park when they are on their way to the gallery? Do you think any of them gave that any thought at all?and why was there not a costing study done on this in advance and what about the public who deserve to be informed?

Parking? We don need no steenking parking. The cultural elite will be taking the bus to their gala gallery events. 🙂

“why was there not a costing study done on this in advance and what about the public who deserve to be informed?”

You sound like someone who should be signing the petition.

of course you think hugo is doing a swell job michael. He gives you a free pass on every issue. I can’t believe today’s story. If there is a way to slant it trust Hugo to find it. VERMIN??? I believe the word the mayor used and YOU wrote it was RATS. I watched the taped meeting and I believe the word rats was used and turns out it was field mice and turns out it was two years ago.

No wonder this art gallery is getting pushed through. The mayor wants his name on this building and will go to any lengths to get it. So much for the taxpayer.
