MPAC, THE MUNICIPAL LAND ASSESMENT UNIT, IS INVESTIGATED FOR IMPROPER OPERATIONS.
Andre Marin, the provincial Ombudsman who is charged with ensuring the correct operation of the government under the law, is now digging through the Municipal Property Assesment unit that is responsible for developing property assesments on Ontario homes and land.
Marin believes that many landowners have been “slaughtered” by MPAC, and that homeowners should not have to be in a position of arguing against assesment increases, when the system used to determine assesed value, has not ryhme or reason to it.
One major problem facing the system is the use of computer generated valuations instead of physical evaluations, which has resulted in the overcharging of 1000’s of homeowners on their assesments.
Oddly, MPAC has begun instituting some of Marins’ recomendations, even though the investigation is not complete, indicating that MPAC was well aware of the issues before the investigation started.
Marin believes the onus should be on MPAC to prove that their numbers right, not on the homeowner to prove them wrong.

If you are in Toronto and Mississauga—no changes. The real problem is ARB hearings. Most of the arbitrators are realistate hacks and want to get out by 10 0’clock. They get paid $80/hr. Pitty the sap who dares to go beyound that time. The hearings are- just-kangaroo court–

A solution to property assessment might be to take the last resale value and add rate of inflation for that year.
